The funeral Mass (or Memorial Mass if the body is not present) is celebrated in the Church. At the entrance, the remains are sprinkled with holy water and covered with a pall, a reminder of Baptism. An urn with cremated remains may be carried in procession or placed on a table at the front of the Church before the service begins.
While holding a funeral Mass is preferred, it is not required. If a Mass cannot be held, the funeral service will include the funeral prayers (funeral liturgy) that are normally part of the Mass.
